01 IDENTIFY

The battery pack is recognized with computer vision from 100s of battery pack variations and its state is assessed. Machine perception recognizes battery types with software that proposes a dismantling sequence.

02 DISMANTLE

We dismantle batteries from big packs into small modules. We perform robotic battery dismantling with custom end-effectors from pack to module that is 4x faster and safer to operate and work in sync with human workers.

03 DISCHARGE

Modules are discharged from residual energy and they are removed from the battery pack. Residual energy from the battery modules and cells is discharged to the grid to reduce operation costs.

04 TEST

Battery cells are tested for their health, residual lifetime, and economic value and are assessed with non-intrusive methods to decide on remanufacturing and recycling. 

05 SORT

Cells are sorted for remanufacturing, repurposing, or recycling. We package batteries in modular grid batteries that can be deployed for grid storage, microgrids, charging stations, and data centers.

FOUNDER | CEO

Wiebe designed the battery packs for Tesla Model X/3 and the 450-mile range EV powertrain for the solar-electric vehicle Lightyear One, which received Time Magazine’s 100 Best Inventions 2019 and Auto Bild Awards.

Ray Ma

ROBOTICS MANUPULATION ENGINEER

Ray makes the robot move to disassemble the batteries with a focus on end effectors and grippers. He has a PhD in robotics from Yale and a BSc from MIT. He has built robots at NASA JPL and 3D printer technology at 3DEO.

Ryan Yao

BATTERY DATA ENGINEER

Ryan assesses cell health with non-intrusive methods for potential second life applications. He has a background in data science and chemical engineering from UC Berkeley and battery cell development experience at QuantumScape and Tesla.

OPERATIONS MANAGER

Kehau oversees the facility, recruiting and culture. Over the past decade, she has helped small businesses scale in business and people operations. Prior to UE, Kehau ran operations at social impact agency, Propper Daley.

We are Universe Energy. Our mission is to be the largest provider of used batteries and their raw materials to power a truly clean energy transition. There is a way to scale reuse into the largest source of new batteries, providing energy access to all and reducing mining.

To manifest this transition, we need to increase battery production but not by traditional means. There is a way to do more with what we already have. Our vision is to supply 2nd-life batteries to emerging economies to meet explosively growing energy needs for the rising billion.

We want to slow down consumption, global production, and mining. We don’t want to replace digging for oil with mining for metals, as we cannot grow infinitely with limited resources. Business as usual is destroying the Earth at a rapid pace and the natural environment we hold dear. We want to continue to revel in nature’s beauty and be awed by what Mother Earth has to offer, conserving this for generations to come.

The world’s global manufacturing system and its supply chains have increased the gaps in equality which will only be amplified by climate change. Let’s stop shipping minerals around the world while exploiting the impoverished. We can do better. Let’s make things locally by reusing what already exists. We can do more with what is right in front of us.

We are in the business of remaking batteries to create a product that lasts longer and turns used cells into new packs. Whatever cannot be used, we help prepare for its next life. We want to make affordable products that can truly last forever. We want everyone to live a conscious life and to have access to clean energy. This helps to slow down the irreversible effects of climate change one battery at a time.
